Fom RGC Website
Beaten at 'Bridge
RGC opened up the season with an away defeat at Newbridge. (23 - 17)
The Gogs didn’t do enough over the 80 minutes, and overall it was a lacklustre performance from the side. They couldn’t raise their tempo, and struggled around the breakdown which hampered them in gaining any momentum.
It was the home team that got the points of the board early with a penalty from Meeke, and his kicking was impressive in the first half. RGC looked dangerous down the left wing with Carwen Ap Myrddin and Ianto Parri combining well, but they just couldn’t finish the attack.
The boot of James Lang earned a penalty score to RGC, and Lang was beginning to get more involved with ball in hand.
The referee was penalising RGC at the breakdown, which meant the Gogs were struggling to gain any momentum. It was no surprise that another penalty from the boot of Keiron Meeke put Newbridge back in the lead.
The opening try of the season went to Ianto Parri, after James Lang sidestepped through the defence to set up the young winger for the score on the 20th minute.
Instead of taking control of the game RGC let Newbridge back into match, as the Gogs failed to build the phases and keep possession.
The game turned with 2 tries from Newbridge, with the second one from Lloyd Pert being a gift from RGC. The ball was kicked into the air and the 3 RGC players failed to collect with the high ball, it then was collected by the scrum half who ran in for the try. Meeke converted to make it 20-8 at half time.
RGC looked to up the tempo in the 2nd half, but struggled to break the defence line. Huw Worthington was putting in a shift breaking the gainline, but the phase play was not forthcoming.
Newbridge looked like extending the lead with a great break by Man Of The Match Kyle Taylor but some great defensive work by Tom Hughes held the ball on the line. It was a try saving tackle, which RGC hoped would be a game changing moment.
On a number of occasions when an RGC player did make a break they were isolated in the tackle, and it led to a turnover.
James Lang hit 3 penalties to make it 20 -17 as RGC chipped away at the lead, and were looking more productive with ball in hand. As the game went on each decision from the referee became more vital as the next score was sure to be the one to decide the game.
That score came from Newbridge and so did the game. RGC did end the game with some good phase play to build an attack from their own line, but it was too little too late over the 80 minutes.
Hopefully they can take the last 5 minutes of today’s game into the clash against Champions Bargoed next week at Eirias, as they will have to up their performance to another level.

Gutted I missed the actual game as not home from work until about 5 mins before kick off. Made up for it down the Club after the match for the Wales game and must say the atmosphere in the lounge was fantastic. Great to see the player up performing and entertaining the crowd during the Wales half time. New hooker is a born entertainer, had the room in stiches. Hopefully this is the start of a great season. See you for the Pontypool match.
